When Boone Memorial Health and the City of Madison held the first Merry Madison Christmas in 2024, there was no Market on Main. The rink was in the People's Bank parking lot, and the season ended with a Polar Express night. Two years later, the 2026 schedule holds the opening-night hayrides, Santa breakfast, Santa photos, concert, movie night and letters to Santa at 397 Main Street. The tree events stay at the lot across from People's Bank. The market at 397 Main was a project of the same hospital foundation that runs the celebration. Madison's December now has a fixed home base, and that home base came out of a health system's plan for downtown.
A Greenhouse Project That Became a Town Square
The building started as the Madison Farmers Market and Greenhouse. The BMH Foundation for Community Health broke ground on June 19, 2024, and pitched the project as a place for fresh food, farming education, community events and downtown business. BBL Carlton won the construction contract. By the time it opened on Sept. 19, 2025, it had a new name, Market on Main, and a grand-opening weekend.
BMH's groundbreaking announcement gave the reasoning in public health terms: tackling food insecurity and the social needs that affect health, while helping local growers and bringing activity back to downtown. A covered spot on Main Street built for weekly produce sales also happens to suit a Santa breakfast, a concert with heaters, or the last stop of a hayride.
Why a Hospital Is Throwing the Party
The hospital ties the holiday season to its health mission directly. After the 2024 celebration, President and CEO Virgil Underwood explained it to Coal Valley News:
"At Boone Memorial Health, we're not just focused on healthcare, we're focused on supporting the overall well-being of our community. Events like the Merry Madison Christmas Celebration are a big part of that."
He told the paper the aim was a community that does well "not just physically, but emotionally and socially as well." The 2026 schedule shows the same thinking in a small way. On Dec. 11, between decorating trees and voting on them, there's a Walk with a Doc at Market on Main from 4 to 5 p.m., and walkers get a free T-shirt.
Three Seasons, One Steady Format
Each year has kept the same core and changed a few details:
| Season | Run dates | Headline concert | Reported highlights |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | Late November through December | Kate Boytek | Rink at the People's Bank lot, tree decorating contest, Polar Express finale |
| 2025 | Nov. 29 to Dec. 28 | Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. | Tree lighting, rink, tree contest, city parade, all public activities free |
| 2026 | Nov. 28 to Dec. 27 | Kate Boytek | Free rink with skates provided, Walk with a Doc, outdoor movie night |
The 2024 finale was sponsored by Cornerstone Family Interventions and Parents as Teachers, and volunteers from the Hero House helped skaters on the ice. In 2025, BMH's announcement said every public activity, skating included, was free, and that food vendors paid a fee to take part. Kate Boytek, a full-time touring and recording artist from Logan, returns this year after playing the first season.
Opening Night Moves Down Main Street
Saturday, Nov. 28, is set up as a walk from one end of the celebration to the other. It runs in this order:
- 5:30 p.m. Sherman High Band plays at the lot across from People's Bank.
- 5:45 p.m. Chapmanville High Band takes over at the same lot.
- 6:00 p.m. The tree lighting ceremony runs until 6:30, and Scott High Band performs.
- After the lighting Scott High Band leads the crowd to Market on Main.
- 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Free hayrides leave from the market while the community band plays on Main Street.
The free rink at Main & State Streets opens the same day and stays open through Dec. 27. The posted hours are 5 to 9 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays, 1 to 9 p.m. on Saturdays, and 1 to 7 p.m. on Sundays. Skates are provided and you don't need a reservation. Also starting Nov. 28, Market on Main takes letters to Santa through Dec. 18.
The December Saturdays, Built Around the Market
After opening night, the market and the People's Bank lot split the December events. Here are the dates by day:
- Saturday, Dec. 5: Free buffet Breakfast with Santa at Market on Main from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., then free pictures with Santa from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Pets are welcome in the photos.
- Friday, Dec. 11: Local organizations decorate trees at the People's Bank lot from noon to 6 p.m., with music, a DJ and hot chocolate. People's Choice voting runs from 6 to 7 p.m. and winners are announced from 7:30 to 8 p.m.
- Saturday, Dec. 12: A free outdoor Kate Boytek concert runs from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Market on Main. Heaters will be set up and folding chairs provided, and you're welcome to bring a stadium chair.
- Saturday, Dec. 19: A free outdoor Christmas movie with s'mores runs from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the market. Blankets and stadium chairs are welcome.
The schedule says events may change and sends people to bmh.org/events for updates, so check there before heading out on a cold night.
The Parade Still Belongs to the Whole Town
The City of Madison's Christmas parade, on the evening of Dec. 5 from 6 to 7 p.m., covers far more ground than anything else in the season. It starts at Scott High, follows Riverside Drive, crosses the Benjamin Price Bridge, then goes down State Street and Main Street and finishes behind Hatfield & Hatfield. You can spend the whole day downtown. Breakfast with Santa wraps up by mid-morning, the photos end at 2:30, and the parade comes over the river and back onto the same blocks that evening.
Before the Lights Go Up
Two November events lead into the season, and both connect to the same downtown.
BMH's free drive-through Community Thanksgiving Dinner is Nov. 23 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Scott High School. The hot meal includes turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, cranberry sauce, rolls and dessert. Cars enter from Fourth Avenue West.
On Thursday, Nov. 12, Accelerate Madison hosts a community dinner meeting from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Madison Civic Center, 261 Washington Ave. Dinner is at 5. According to Coal Valley News, the agenda covers community revitalization, nonprofit status and the future of Accelerate Madison 2.0. Reservations are required and seating is limited to the first 150. To reserve, email [email protected] or call 980-349-9983.
Those blocks are also part of a bigger plan. At an Aug. 6 public meeting on Madison's outdoor recreation plan, Coal Valley News reported, officials went over a master plan for Main and State Street streetscapes, a proposed walking and biking trail network at Ruckers Branch, and possible RV camping on the former pool property. All of these are still proposals under public review. On Old River Road, the building at the old pool has been torn down and the pool filled in. The mayor's eventual goal is to use the property for recreation.
The rink at Main & State opens Saturday, Nov. 28. From then until Dec. 27, Madison's busiest blocks are the ones between the People's Bank lot and 397 Main Street.
